Firsthand voices of WWII resound in ֱ’s production of “The Good War”

MALIBU, CA – October 23, 2025 – ֱ’s Lisa Smith Wengler Center for the Arts will present “The Good War,” adapted from Studs Terkel’s Pulitzer Prize–winning oral history, November 11–15 at Smothers Theatre in Malibu.
With permission from The New Press and the Studs Terkel Estate, ֱ theatre professor and director Nanci Carol Ruby brings this powerful verbatim theatre production to life. Drawn directly from Terkel’s interviews with individuals who experienced World War II—including a Tuskegee Airman, a Hiroshima survivor, and everyday citizens on the home front—the performance weaves together first-hand accounts, period music, and timeless questions about war, memory, and humanity.
“It is a privilege to work with our talented student actors and guest artist Drew Powell, to bring these impactful memories to life,” says director Nanci Carol Ruby. “Studs Terkel's work captures a moment in our history that resonates deeply today.”
ֱ’s student cast will be joined by professional guest artist Drew Powell, known for his role on the Max series “The Pitt,” which won the 2025 Emmy Award for Best Drama Series.
“I’m so honored and excited to get to collaborate with these talented ֱ students and director Nanci Carol Ruby on this special and important piece of theater,” said Powell. “My grandfather, whom I loved dearly, was a fighter pilot and veteran of three wars, including WWII, so these stories hit close to home.”
In preparation for the production, the ֱ Veterans (PeppVet) Council, the University’s network supporting military-connected students, educated the cast about military culture and history. The creative team has also worked closely with US Marine Veteran and Military Specialist, James Bane, to ensure authenticity in the prop weapons used on stage.
“The dedicated student artists with their fearless leader, Nanci Carol Ruby, embody the courage and resilience of those who first lived through these harrowing stories,” said Bane. “We are reminded why we fight and persevere. This is what theatre is for.”
Following the November 12 performance, audiences are invited to a special talkback discussion featuring members of PeppVet, the student cast, and guest panelist US Marine Veteran, Greg Cope White, who wrote the book and screenplay for “Boots” premiering this fall on Netflix.
“Every time we tell these stories, we breathe life into history,” said White. “We remember the people who served, behind the headlines, and we learn from them how to move forward with purpose and gratitude. I’m looking forward to moderating the talkback where we’ll reflect on their stories together.”
In addition, the Lisa Smith Wengler Center for the Arts will host a veterans reception on Wednesday, November 12 at 6:30 PM, in honor of those who have served. Veterans always receive 10% off tickets to all Center for the Arts performances. Additionally, for this production, they are also eligible to receive complimentary opening night tickets through or by calling the Box Office.
“The Good War” reflects ֱ’s ongoing commitment to arts that inspire dialogue, honor history, and amplify voices across generations.
